Sustainability · Food miles
From 1,500 km to a few metres
Hiperlokal dan terdesentralisasi. Hyperlocal and decentralised, because the shortest supply chain is the one that never leaves the building.
Why distance matters in Indonesia
Akar points to Indonesia's geography: an archipelago of thousands of islands with dense, congested cities, where fresh produce often travels a long way from rural farms to urban tables. Akar argues that long food miles bring transport cost, spoilage and carbon emissions (MIT Solve).
Modular indoor farms put production inside the city, in shops, hotels, kitchens and homes, so produce can be eaten "within minutes of harvesting".
Reported pilot results (2023)
1,500+ km avoided
Pilot off-takers cut the common practice of ordering from farmers more than 1,500 km away.
70% less emissions
A 70% carbon emission cut compared with conventional distribution, as reported by Akar.
2–3 jobs re-deployed
Some off-takers saved 2–3 employees’ salaries on warehouse-related work.
