Indonesia’s food supply chain
“Food supply chain problems in Indonesia are pessimum.” Akar’s founding argument, in its own words.
The problem, as Akar describes it
In its 2023 MIT Solve application, Akar makes these points:
- Indonesia is an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands with a population of over 280 million, many in congested cities.
- Fresh produce travels long distances from rural farms to urban centres, adding cost, spoilage and emissions.
- Natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods and eruptions can cut supply chains to cities.
- The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted food logistics and raised prices.
Akar's application also cites FAO and World Bank estimates of Indonesian food loss and waste. See the application for its figures and sources.
The hyperlocal response
Growing food inside the city, in modular units at the point of consumption, removes most of the distance. See food miles.
