pH, EC and TDS
Three readings tell you most of what you need to know about a hydroponic reservoir.
pH
How acidic or alkaline the solution is. It controls which nutrients roots can take up; most leafy greens prefer slightly acidic water.
EC (electrical conductivity)
How well the solution conducts electricity. This rises with the amount of dissolved salts, so it measures nutrient strength.
TDS / ppm
Total dissolved solids, usually shown in ppm and estimated from EC. AKAR Nutrition is designed for use at about 400 ppm.
Why automate it
Plants change the solution as they drink and feed, so readings drift. Automated sensors, like the nine in an Akar unit, catch drift early and trigger dosing before plants suffer.
